Favored by a bright New England morning, the new CareWell Urgent Care Center at 58 Bedford St., Lexington, was dedicated with invited guests, staff members, and a Cape Cod musical group, Kincora, which played Celtic tunes on authentic Irish musical instruments. Several passers-by going to neighboring businesses joined the CareWell audience along their way.

The ceremony began with a blessing offered by the Rev. Mary Jane Donohue of the Episcopal Diocese of MA. In her prayer, Rev. Donohue asked for” love’s healing” of the scars of those affected by the Boston Marathon attacks, and blessing on the CareWel l staff as well of those who will seek healing at the new center on Bedford Street.

Renee M. Lohman, CareWell’s founder and chief development officer, spoke on the increasing need for urgent care services as healthcare needs continue to grow extensively in the U.S. In Lexington, she said. “CareWell Urgent Care will be the place to come for quality medical care in a comfortable environment when someone has an episodic, but still urgent, non-life-threatening illness or injury.”
The Lexington site is the 5th CareWell Urgent Care Center to open since last fall. Others are located in Dennis, Norwell, snd Billerica, MA, and Warwick, RI. Several more are planned at many New England locations.
Kathleen Belmonte of Lexington, CareWell vice president for operations, introduced the clinical staff for the new CareWell Center: Dr. Nazaret Derkevorkian, also of Lexington, Lead Physician; Kathy Appley, LPN; Nancie Jimenez, LPN; and Marge Peters and Angela Salamone, Radiology Technicians.

Mary Jo Bohart, Execitive Director of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, welcomed CareWell to the ranks of Lexington businesses, and Town Manager Carl F. Vallente linked the ways in which Lexington’s Fire Department and CareWell will support each other’s vital work.

State Sen. Kenneth J. Donnelly, himself a former firefighter with extensive experience in emergency medicine, stressed the importance placed on health care in the Commonwealth and congratulated CareWell for successfully placing urgent care centers in two districts he represents, Billerica as well as Lexington.

CareWell Urgent Care functions as an extension of a patient’s own primary care provider, whether the patient lives nearby or is visiting from another part of the country. With the patient’s permission, CareWell will forward x-rays, lab results and diagnostic notes to the patient’s own doctor within 24 hours of their visit.
The growth to about 9,000 urgent care centers throughout the country is due to the desire for immediate access to care for non-life-threatening illness or injury in a timely and effective manner,” said Dr. Derkevorkian.
“Also, early treatment usually results in better health outcomes—a key factor in the growth in urgent care centers nationwide.” He noted that CareWell centers features on-site x-ray and lab capability which add to patient convenience. Further, he said, many health insurance companies now recommend an urgent care center when patients call their insurer’s hot line after hours in need of treatment.
The Lexington CareWell Urgent Care Center is located at 58 Bedford Street. It will be open Monday – Friday, 8am – 8pm; Saturday. 9am – 5pm; and Sunday, 10am – 4pm. Most major insurance plans, Medicare, and credit cards are accepted and co-pays are similar to those charged for a doctor’s office visit. Wait times are minimal.
